Old Havana
In the City of Havana you will find its Historical Center: the Old Havana that evokes last centuries. It occupies an area of 2.1 km2, and contains 900 constructions from the XVI to the XIX centuries. You will see the architecture and the inherited urbanism of four centuries of Spanish colonization, besides other 200 constructions built in the first quarter of the XX century. Five squares and several plazuelas of special urban layout and the system of fortifications, sentries of the bay, are symbols for the "Humanity's Heritance" nomination that was granted in 1982, for the United Nations for the Education, the Science and the Culture Organization (UNESCO).

The Restoration of the Historical Center began on May 5 of 1981. The works has been organized and directed by the Historian's Office, with the care of Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler. This urban rehabilitation has been joined to the social and economic affairs, but has been done safeguarding the inheritance and the national identity.

The Provincial Library "Rubén Martínez Villena" is one of the restored centers, located in Bishop Street 59 in front of the Plaza de Armas. It is also surrounded by other historical buildings: the Museum of Natural Sciences, Santa Isabel Hotel , the Palacio del Segundo Cabo (today it welcomes to the Cuban Institute of the Book), the Palacio of the General Captains (place that occupies the Museum of the City), The Mine Restaurant, The Royal Force Castle and The Templete, these two last have been transformed into museums.
